A vertical mullion curtain wall is a structural system that uses vertical mullions and horizontal transoms to support a building's glazing and provide a grid pattern on the exterior of a building:

Mullions

Vertical elements that divide units of a window, door, or glass curtain wall. Mullions can be used for decoration, to provide structural support, or to divide larger openings into smaller windows.

Transoms

Horizontal elements that divide units of a window, door, or glass curtain wall.

Curtain wall

A non-structural exterior wall covering that's typically made of glass, metal, or stone. Curtain walls are structurally independent and can span multiple stories.

Vertical mullions are a key feature of curtain walls, which are structural grids made up of vertical mullions and horizontal transoms:

Support: Mullions and transoms provide rigid support for the glazing.

Anchoring: Mullions are anchored to the wall structure using galvanized steel brackets.

Splices: Splices between mullions allow for vertical movement while providing lateral resistance.

Expansion joints: Special expansion joints are used at the junctions of the mullions and transoms.

Drainage: Drainage and ventilation slots are located in the vertical pressure plate.

Gaskets: EPDM gaskets are used to ensure watertightness.

Glass movement: Glass units slide along glazing gaskets to accommodate movement of the surrounding aluminum frame.

Curtain walls can be stick or unitized systems. In stick systems, the mullions and horizontal elements are built in situ, while in unitized systems, the aluminum framing is pre-assembled and glazed off-site.

 

Curtain walls are used in commercial and similar buildings to provide a weather barrier and allow light to transmit to the interior space. The most common material used for curtain wall mullions is aluminum because it is strong, lightweight, and flexible.
